This suspenseful little tale was inspired by my recent research into cryptid legends from my home state of Oklahoma. I found info about satyrs, freshwater octopi and an alligator man, but the one that caught my eye was an enormous, dragon-like creature called the Thunderbird. It was said to have terrorized the southeastern part of the state in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, attacking settlers and abducting children until a hunter finally dispatched it in the 1920s. Moving the time and place to the Oklahoma panhandle during the Dust Bowl, I wrote my own version of how this final showdown could have gone. Brace yourself!
